We are being brainwashed into believing that we need certain things from a certain pair of jeans, the “it” handbag, a hybrid, eco friendly dish detergent and even a particular flat iron. We need none of those things. I heard someone say it best, “sex and air are a lot of like– because when you’re not getting any, it really matters. Just like it really matters if you can’t sleep at night. And it really matters if you don’t have food to eat. Or water to drink. Or a safe place to lay your head at night. Or someone to hug you and kiss you. No matter what the next guy is selling, it ALWAYS GOES BACK TO THE BASICS. And my belief is that happiness and peace cannot exist without basic human needs being met. I know what you are going to say next. What about the buddha master’s that need nothing–except air to breathe? They need sleep. They need food. None of them are meditating in a monastary in the ghetto! They are teaching themselves a way to feel, to “be”– to put all their other needs aside and serve their God. Yes, but take them out of their sacred cocoons and they will be like the rest of us.
I think my best friend says it quite simply and eloquently. “We all just want to love and be loved.”
